Alright, It’s that time again; Commission Time! I’m reopening slots to take care of bills this month because it looks like I’m going to be really short on funds. Last month I had to take money out of savings, and this month I’m going to need to help my mom with things, too. Unfortunately we live on a really tight budget to begin with, and to top it off they’ve just cut my hours at work. Time to pimp myself out again! ;)
My goal for the end of this month: $320.
It’s not all bad, though! At the end of June I’ll actually be appearing at Supercon in Miami… as an artist, not an attendee! Over the past few months I’ve been honing my traditional skills and I’ve gotten really confident with my work on paper. So this time I’ll be offering stuff on comic board, cardstock and ACEOS in order to build a solid porfolio for when I go. I’m really looking forward to be able to work in this way.
Prices:

Inked Sketch: $15. Up to 2 characters. I need to get good at these because I’ll be doing them at the con for $20 ;).
ACEO: $7 Ink + color
Finished inks: $40. Up to two characters. Done on full size bristol comic board ;).
Comic pages (inks): $50 /page. $40/page if over 5 pages.

I typically tend to skew towards the futuristic sorts of robots, with clockworks and automatons being more of an old-fashioned whimsy, but I really have fallen irretrievably in love with these guys, because they are just so charming and gorgeous and PERFECT.

Ah, Stumptown Comics Fest.
I am awful at the whole “con report” thing. But I wanted to say a few things. Stumptown this year was possibly the best year yet.
Since I started going, I have used this event as sort of a benchmark. An easy way to evaluate how much improvement I have made in several areas the previous year. This is easier to track than something like New Years, because the interactions I get involved in allow for easy contrast.
Past years have been a slow evolution, mostly in my art skills. The first two years, I used the Dark Horse portfolio reviews as an indicator of progress. But also in my ability to talk to people, and who I was able to talk to.
Last year, I met a few new people, but mostly stayed close to my friends. Didn’t have the guts to really show my work to anyone.
Well, this year…was rather different. There was a massive jump in my skills over the past year, so I was far more confident in my abilities. I also was able to overcome a lot of my social fears and actually converse with other artists, even when I could not buy their stuff.
But the biggest difference was the sorts of people I felt comfortable talking to. Not due to any new boost in confidence to strike up random conversations, but because they already knew me. Or I knew a mutual contact.
It was mind-blowing. To go from last year only having actual conversations with maybe a dozen people, to knowing so many people this year I was never at a loss of someone to talk to.
Hopefully, next year the change will be instead of being on the wait list, I’ll have my own table!

I don’t really have a problem with sitting 6-8 hours straight working on one illustration, (I suspect many artists don’t, right?) and once you get the entire painting process down it actually doesn’t even feel that long, you’ll just steamroll through the thing like a bossss.
